The Vancouver Fruit Tree Project is a non-profit society. Our volunteers harvest extra fruit from backyard fruit trees and redistribute it to community groups. In the past 14 years we have picked more than 48,000 pounds (that’s over 24 tons!) of fruit and redistributed it to community centres, neighbourhood houses, daycares and other community groups. There are many available volunteer opportunities! Please feel free to contact us, and donations are welcome.
As a new year blooms, the VFTP would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our community a happy and fruitful 2016 ahead! While the delights of fresh summer fruit may feel like a distant memory amidst these wintery days, we nevertheless wanted to extend our sincerest thanks for your various forms of involvement and support throughout the past season.
2015 marked the 16th season of Fruit Tree Project operations, a year filled with growth and bounty. Despite the drought, we completed 51 picks last year and harvested 4715 pounds of backyard fruits to share with community members! These food waste recovery and community-building efforts were entirely made possible because of the generosity and dedication of our pick leaders, volunteers, tree owners and community partners across Vancouver.
Please check out our season-end newsletter for a full review of last year’s highlights and announcements. This winter, as your fruit trees rest and recharge for another abundant summer ahead, so too will the VFTP board members and volunteers. We look forward to connecting with you again in April as we emerge from hibernation; however, if you have any questions in the interim, please contact email@example.com. Please also keep in mind that dormancy does not necessarily mean idleness! This is an ideal time to have your fruit trees pruned in order to help them flourish this year; for more information, please visit our Pruning Social Enterprise page.
Once again, we hope you enjoy your first bites of 2016 and we very much look forward to building community through fruit recovery with you again this year!
